President
Associated Student Government

of San Diego Miramar College

First serving as a club representative in the Associated Student Government, I was elected President of the organization at the end of my freshman year. Under my leadership, the ASG expended tens of thousands of dollars to directly assist students during the pandemic and was the first governance body to return to in-person operations district-wide.

As ASG President, I always held an open-door policy knowing that I was elected to serve my peers. I dedicated myself to open and transparent communication and encourage all students to get in touch and to get involved, and they did! My goal to serve all students of Miramar College and the San Diego Community College District as best I could—I feel—was met. My top priorities as Miramar ASG President included advocating for more open education resources, more comprehensive student services, increased student supports particularly for traditionally underserved groups, and increased student and community engagement as the college transitioned back to in-person instruction.

Miramar Dreamers Support Program

Under the Dean of Student Affairs' direction, as Program Assistant for the Miramar Dreamers Support Office, I coordinate college services for undocumented students, employees, and their families. My other duties include overseeing programing, directing communications and marketing, creating and maintaining comprehensive data-tracking dashboards to inform program effectiveness, authoring multiple reports. Through marketing and communications efforts and one-on-one student support sessions, I have learned precisely what students need to be successful. I work closely with many college departments and outside organizations to produce in-person and virtual events geared for this underserved population. The connections I have made in this role have been instrumental in my advocacy for all students bringing Miramar College closer to its goal of truly being a student-ready institution of higher learning.

SDCCD Student Trustee

As ASG President for Miramar College, I was elected by ex-officio office to serve as one of three rotating Student Trustees on the San Diego Community College District's Board of Trustees. In congress with my fellow student trustees, I was a vocal advocate for all learners, particularly the least advantaged among my peers. I continued to push for more open education resources and low- or no-cost textbooks, and knowing the struggle students have faced through distance learning, I penned an open letter to District employees advocating for the importance of an expeditious, sensible, and safe return to in-person instruction. I maintained close working relationships with my counterparts within the SDCCD and my colleagues throughout the California Community College system.

President of Club Spectrum

In my time as President of Club Spectrum, I created a comprehensive website dedicated to educating the public about the organization and to make appropriate resources available to students. I encouraged members to explore our community's history through the LGBTQ+ Figures Through History project. I also wrote detailed agendas, kept meticulous notes, memos, and official minutes, and coordinated with faculty, advisors, and other student organization officers to create a culture of collaboration and partnership at the college.

During the Fall 2020 semester, I made sure all students had the opportunity to get involved. I organized a partnership with the Miramar Food Pantry and Student Veterans Organization to bring together representatives and members of five student organizations to distribute donated food to our disadvantaged students. During the Spring 2021 semester, I organized a virtual game night for students while advocated and supporting several small local, minority owned business with an opportunity drawing of gift cards to those businesses.

AS Chartered Club Representative

In my freshman year, I served as an Associated Student Government Representative. I played an active role upholding standards and producing fun and functional events to engage and inform the student body at Miramar College as well as advocated for those less fortunate.

I supported a student-focused budget plan. Taking part in many workgroups, my student peers and I allocated $10,000 worth of funds for ASG sponsored scholarships, apportioned funds for events and charitable initiatives, and assisting the then-treasurer, I oversaw the acquisition of thousands of dollars worth of goods and other products.

As a member of the Future Events Committee I led efforts on several initiatives: I employed a textbook voucher program along with the then-ASG Vice President, created a T-shirt design competition, organized a drive-thru Associated Student Rush event for student clubs and organizations, moderated a virtual alumni event, and created marketing material for these and more.

Equity in Action

In my first year at Miramar College, I was among the co-authors for the college's officially adopted equity definition. In my sophomore year, I served on the planning committee of the inaugural Miramar College Equity Summit overseeing the equity-themed ASG Art for Equity art contest & scholarship award, including authoring the contest prospectus. I then moderated a student-focused workshop on being an equity-minded student leader.

LGBTQX Alliance

Working with many stakeholders, I assisted in the planning and execution of the Miramar College LGBTQ+ Community Days virtual fair. On day one of the two-day event, I moderated a forum during which panelists discussed the intersectionality of being undocumented and LGBTQIA. The second day, I was one of three student panelist to partake in an open format Q&A relating the experiences of LGBTQ+ community college students. Additionally, I organized a fundraising team for the San Diego AIDS Walk raising over $5,000 for HIV/AIDS research and prevention.

Student Senate for California Community Colleges

In my sophomore year at Miramar College, I was appointed as the official delegate representing San Diego Miramar College in Region X of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. It was my pleasure to serve as Miramar's spokesperson and voting delegate at the 2021 SSCCC General Assembly.
